The World Race team really wanted to take a trip to Cerro Negro and try volcano surfing and I really wanted the opportunity to redeem myself after my trip there in June. We had such a fun and adventurous day!!
We hitched a ride to the base of Cerro Negro in the back of a giant cattle truck. It was so fun bouncing around on the bumpy roads in our truck and fortunately we didn’t have to share it with any animals!
It was such a beautiful day for this adventure! I loved seeing beautiful blue skies and the Cerro Negro rising up in the distance. I could already tell that this was going to be a better day for hiking than the last time. The view are incredible and I was really glad to not have them all blotted out by thick fog.
We hiked down the the base and were ready to start our Cerro Negro adventure! Cerro Negro is a volcano that you can climb and then surf down using a board or running and sliding on your feet. I’ve really enjoyed having Barb and the World Racers here to join me on adventures and fun days off! This is our whole group (minus Amanda).
You start the hike up over a ton of volcanic rocks until the rocks are finer and the path is smoother. We had fun hiking up just talking and laughing together. I love hiking up the volcano and seeing all the beautiful views. There was a great overlook about halfway up. I love just standing in awe of the Lord’s beautiful creation!!
We made it to the top of the mountain and celebrating with some jumping pictures, looking over at the gorgeous views, and playing with the volcano surf boards. I really enjoyed getting to actually see the top of the mountain and to know where the path was… last time I was here the fog was so thick that you couldn’t see anything. (If you want to see the difference check out my blog: A Day of Adventure)
Now it’s time to start surfing!! Allan and Amanda (pictured right) brought boards up with them while the rest of us ran down. It was such a cool experience- running down a volcano at full speed and sliding to the side. This part of so much better when we went down the actual path! We had an incredible time. I could hear everyone yelling as we run/slide down “I really can’t believe this is happening!” I love Nica adventures!!!
We had a great day of adventure & fun! Of course, the day totally wiped everyone out! Almost everyone crashed and slept in the back of the cattle truck the entire way back to Leon. I’m actually glad that I didn’t sleep then after seeing how gross everyone else was from lying down on the truck bed.
Here is a short video from our day of adventure. This will help you understand more what it’s like to volcano surf!
